Attendance Matters

Regular attendance is essential for student success. Being at school every day helps students build important skills, stay connected with their peers and teachers, and achieve their learning goals. When students attend school consistently, they are more likely to thrive academically and socially. Link to DoE attendance matters.

Why attendance matters

Whole day absence from school

If your child is absent from school, a parent/carer can provide an explanation by entering the reason through the Sentral Parent Portal or emailing the reason and any relevant documentation such as a medical certificate to randwick-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au

Alternatively, a note written by the student's parent/carer can be delivered to Student Services upon the student's return to school.

How to lodge future absentees via the Sentral Portal

Late arrival to school
If your child arrives late to school, they must report to Student Services (North) located outside of the front office or Student Services South (Room: SO1) to sign in late to school.
A parent/carer can provide an explanation by sending the student with a note or medical certificate, entering the reason through the Sentral Parent Portal, or emailing the reason to randwick-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au

This helps us maintain accurate attendance record.
Departing school early
If your child needs to leave school early, please notify the school in advance by sending a note with the student or emailing randwick-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au with the reason and expected time of departure.
Alternatively, parents/carers are welcome to come to Student Services to complete an early leave form. Students cannot be dismissed early from school without written permission from a parent/carer.
Extended leave requests

If your child will be absent from school for more than five consecutive school days, an Extended Leave Form must be completed prior to their absence. Approval from the school principal is required for extended leave, and approval may be affected by factors such as the total number of school days missed or any overlap with the assessment schedule.

To complete the process, you will need to submit additional documentation along with the completed form, including but not limited to a flight itinerary or details regarding the purpose and method of travel.

The Extended Leave Form can be collected from Student Services, or a copy can be emailed to you once the school has been notified of the upcoming extended period of absence.

Our school absence notification system
Regular attendance at school is essential to assist students to maximise their potential. At Randwick High School, we must ensure our school has effective measures in place to monitor and follow up students absences. We are required under Section 22 of the Education Act (1990) to undertake all reasonable measures to contact parents promptly and within two school days of absence. We have implemented additional measures to ensure we are upholding the NSW Department of Education standards here at Randwick High School. Our school absence notification system consists of a text message, follow up email and Sentral notification in the parent portal, to minimise unexplained absences. An absence is unexplained if parents have failed to provide an explanation to the school within 7 days. Thank you for your understanding and assistance.
